BARRIERS OF TEACHING TOEFL IN INDONESIA

Abstract


TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a test taken to measure the ability of people in understanding English. This test is one of the most widely used tests in Indonesia, especially to meet the university requirements and to get scholarships. Just like teaching English in general, teaching TOEFL is a challenging job. However, teaching TOEFL for Indonesian adult learners is full of barriers. Frequently, they have a tendency to insist the higher score, but unfortunately, they lack of motivation as time goes by or as the materials get complicated. Here, the teacher seems the one who has to adapt to the students needs by applying various methods and strategies. Not only the students, have the problems also arisen from the limitation of meeting schedules and insufficient materials. Therefore, this study attempts to share the problems faced by teachers in teaching TOEFL for Indonesian adult learners. The teaching model showed in this paper is based on the TOEFL learning in Language Training Centre of Universitas Gadjah Mada. By showing the problems, the writer expects to get the appropriate solution in order to help teachers to overcome the barriers.
